Scandals Are Growing Around Foreign Teachers

Native English language teachers  have been in Georgia for only 2-3 months and scandals have increased around them already. Complaints have already been voiced in the capital city too.

“Native English language teacher Alex Williams was dismissed from #55 public school. According to school children’s statement the head of school dismissed the teacher as incompetent. Though, the school administration does not expose this information and demands the schoolchildren not to talk about it widely”.

The head of school Tamar Tchabashvili personally  does not prove the fact of the teacher’s dismissal, though, she states openly that the invited teacher no longer works at school.

“We really invited a native English language teacher  Alex Williams, but he had to give a 3 months’ course that already came to an end” - said Tchabashvili.

As for the standpoint of the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia, they promised to investigate the above mentioned fact in the Ministry, though, they no longer  answered the calls later.

The experts felt doubts about foreign teachers’ qualification and competency from then on, but all these things  gradually acquire a scandal shape.

The first scandal happened in Zugdidi #4 Public School, when Mr. So-and-so English teacher who was assigned at school,  published his immoral photos in the social net.  This fact gave trouble  to the whole Georgia as well as the population of Zugdidi in particular.  However, the Minister of Education and Science of Georgia undertook the responsibility of Thomas Fletcher’s defence. In return, he kept the schoolchildren totally undefended.

“These photos are falsified, but in fact,  Thomas Fletcher was considered  as homosexual. Owing to spreading disinformation, foreign teachers are going to take the matter to court. Unfortunately, there are people in the country who are ready to cast dirt at everything, this is very bad”, - said the Minister.

David Pipia who is a host of Thomas Fletcher said that he talked with the foreigner about that event. Thomas explained  that the boys were drunk and decided to cheat. He said he would not conceal if he had an untraditional orientation as there was nothing to be concealed. The most important thing is that Fletcher was very surprised by such strict judgment of non-traditional orientation in Georgia.

Journalists in Zugdidi have quite  different opinions about it. “I find it hard to describe the sickening  poses of so called teacher published in the photos…but Shashkin openly said that the situation  was aggravated by the journalists, otherwise, there was no point in arousing alarm. He said that the journalists forgot the rules of hospitality. “Nobody cares about Fletcher’s orientation but when he is in contact with schoolchildren, it is crime not to speak about it openly”, said the editor of the magazine” Gia Boklomi”, journalist Ilia Chachibaia.

In spite of big scandals arisen recently,   another group of  English teachers arrived in Georgia. Foreign teachers were met by the representatives of the Minister of Education and Science of Georgia at the international airport of Tbilisi.

This is the 9th group of English teachers arrived in Georgia under the project “Teach and Learn with Georgia”. The project envisages bringing  1000 native English language teachers to  Georgia up to the end of 2010.
